The U.P. Beta Sigma Fraternity is the first post war fraternity in the University of the Philippines (UP). At the University of the Philippines in Padre Faura, honor graduates from different schools converged. From U.P. High, Jesus Jayme led a group who called themselves the "Gay Varsitarians". Nicanor P. Jacinto headed a group from Ateneo de Manila and De La Salle. They were known as the UP's 20. Daily, the two groups, off from their classes, would sit on the steps of the old Cancer Institute Building. Bound by their common pursuit of excellence in their studies, they gained a deep respect for each other's opinions. Camaraderie was easily established. Jesus Jayme was the one who first talked to Professor David Wico about organizing a fraternity. Tiyo David suggested the merger of the UP 20's and the Gay Varsitarians. To comply with the minimum requirement, then, of 50 members for a fraternity, the united group initiated 10 additional members. They adopted the name U.P. Beta Sigma Fraternity (Brotherhood of Scholars). On July 14, ten days after the declaration of the country's independence from the U.S., the first set of officers were inducted in solemn ceremonies. Jesus Jayme was charter president. Nicanor P. Jacinto Jr. was vice president.

Hi Frantic, bakit "Gay" varsitarians?

Am just guessing but it makes sense that their use of the word "gay" was in its original nuance of "carefree" and "happy".

I am not really sure I believe it denotes the character of the group.

Ang mga Betan Elite ba pag nag college ay full brod na or at least half brod ng mga BE? or meron kayong council or something like it to look after you dahil marami rami din naman ang population nyo. Thanks.

Being a Betan Elite has advantages and disadvantages kung papasok ka ng Beta Sigma.  There are Beta Sigmans (na Betan Elite) who would naturally treat them leniently at aalagan sila.  On the other hand, ang mga Beta Sigmans na hindi Betan Elite (there are also some who are Betan Elites before) ay very strict sa kanila at matindi pagdating sa initiation.

At any rate, please take note that the Betan Elite was prohibited from recruiting since 1980 per the decision of the Beta Sigma Philippines, although I understand may nag-exist pa na mga chapters up to the 1990s. I don't know the official reasons but many older brods intimated to me na dahil ito sa rumble issue. Kaya wala ng existing Betan Elite chapters nationwide.  Kung meron man hindi ito recognized.

Good for you.. It will just be a cause of problems like what has been happening today sa SRB and APO. somehow, it was a sound decision na itigil na yung highschool counterpart nyo kung in reality eh hindi naman talaga sila co-equal sa mga college. If you guys didn't do it, baka may Betan elite College na rin...

Yup. I know Brod. SRB had to. Wala na ibang option eh. Kung sana noon pa naging official ang recognition. anyways, Di pa naman huli ang lahat for both Frats to be allies...we should be, after all, same principles naman at maganda naman ang samahan noon.

back to topic, natuwa lang ako kasi nakita ng BE leadership yung puedeng mangyari in the future kaya siguro they decided to stop recruiting HS as Betan Elite. I can't help but to compare it with SRB and APO. that's all.

BROTHERHOOD. sinama ito sa tenents and codes of conducts natin para i apply hnd lng sa loob nang kapatiran kundi sa labas dn nang kapatirin. panu ka makitungo sa ibang tao at sa mga nakapaligid sayo.

Hi Frantic, bakit "Gay" varsitarians?

I think you know it.
If you're UPian you know the stereotypes.

but, these must not be discussed here.
this is BETAN ELITE forum not BETA SIGMA

Just to clarify things:

UP 20's + Gay Varsitarian(30 gay var.) = Beta Sigma to reach 50 starting members
Beta Sigma created betan elite

That is why a stag elite here reacted loudly
when he read that we are telling that stag elite was also
formed by gay varsitarian.
If you
can't study in a University...
how dare you to join a frat
and exclude yourself from "barbarians"?

1990s may mga BE pa. I know several of them. Probably, what would differentiate them from SRB, is that once they reach college, pumapasok sila ng Beta Sigma. I think this is what happened in Letran Calamba. Walang Beta Sigma chapter doon. And I think two of the pioneers there were BE in HS. They could have put up BE chapter for college, but opted to put up a Beta Sigma chapter instead. Kung may BE o Betan na taga Calamba, please correct me if I am wrong.

^ My understanding with your statement is that Betan Elites "put up" a Beta Sigma Chapter in Letran Calamba.  Hindi po puede mangyari ito dahil only Beta Sigmans can establish chapters in colleges and universities.  Yan ang basic requirement, aside from the other procedural and documentary requirements prescribed sa Constitution and By-Laws ng Beta Sigma Philippines.

Please also read my previous post para maliwanagan ka tungkol sa Betan Elite vis-a-vis Beta Sigma :)

Sorry. Allow me to clarify my statement that BEs started the Beta Sigma chapter in Letran Calamba. I think they were instrumental in the establishment of the Beta Sigma chapter in Letran; they most probably petitioned as Betans either in another college then transferred to Letran or requested Betans to establish a chapter in Letran Calamba, and these 2 were part of the pioneering batch. I read it somewhere. Let me check again.

Yep, confirmed. The BEs were students in Letran Calamba, and in their desire to join Beta Sigma, requested Betans from other schools to establish a chapter there.

Quote

After my 1st semester on the said college I met up with my batch mates in the Betan Elite, Jerome Nicolas and Anthony Domingo, and a few brods from Letran Elite like James Bautista, Reinier Silva, and Bernie Turano of U.P.I.S. Elite. That time, there was no chapter of our Beloved Fraternity in Letran. After a few sessions with my fellow Elites, like hanging around and drinking during our extra time outside of the campus, we decided we wanted to become Beta Sigmans in this college. We asked the help of Brod Arnel Catapang '93 MIT and Brod Remberth Cabangbang '88 UPLB to open a new chapter here in Laguna. And so with other Manila brods from FEU, Trinity College, MIT, and TIP, this became a reality.  -- Randel V. Aragones 93a, CSJL(Letran)

I got the quote from here.

Bro,

I'm from Letran Calamba....and yes marami ng BE ngayon sa Letran Calamba...To our BE friends out there (at baka nagbabasa ang utol ko dito from UPLB BE) please correct me if I'm wrong, Si Jacob (last name nya at naging kapitbahay ko ito pero nakalimutan ko ang first name) ang nagdala ng BE sa Letran. He transferred from UPLB to Letran. Madalas pa akong pumasyal sa Letran Calamba that time na active sya. Pero sa history ng BE Letran Calamba na nasa internet ay wala ang name nya although some of the names mentioned sa history are very familiar sa akin kasi I believe from LB sila...Late 80s at 90s ay marami ng Elite sa Letran College Calamba at isa sa kanila ay madalas tumambay sa APO Letran tambayan dahil sa common friends at classmates...kaya meron kaming mallit na information paano nabuo ang BE sa Letran...Like I mentioned before sa ibang thread, there are 4 major frats sa Letran College (I said college kasi may HS sa Letran) Calamba from 80s to early 90s those are APO, TGP, Gamma Sigma (Scorpions) at FROKS...wala pang BE at Eagles during my time....

Early 80s maraming SRB at Betan Elite sa Canossa Academy Calamba. At madalas din silang magkaron ng gulo...
