This thread is for notable news on The TAU ALPHA Fraternity.

Stupidity is not the lack of knowledge, but the illusion of having it.

We VALIDATE the Greatness and Glory of The Fraternity not through FALSE BRAVADO.

We rather defend the letters that we wear through facts, performance, and logic. Deal with it.

"Sail on, sail on, ye Argonauts, the Truth for each of you is there, for you to find. As you find it, so will you find the common good."

There are gangs and there are pseudo-frats... then there are fratmen and there are U.P. Fratmen... and finally, there are The Argonauts of U.P. Diliman.

Since 1932. Nothing more. Nothing less. No one else.

We are pleased to announce that two Brods are Alumni Awardees at the UP Homecoming this June 21, 2014, Sunday at the UP Theatre.

The UPAA Board is awarding the Most Distinguished Alumni Award to DOST Secretary Brod Mario G. Montejo, Tau Alpha Batch 1970.

Now, the TAFI (TAU ALPHA Foundation, Inc.) Board is proud to announce that the UPAA is also awarding a Distinguished Alumni Award to MWSS Administrator Brod Gerardo "Gerry" I. Esquivel, Tau Alpha Batch 1981A, for Good Governance.

Both Mario and Gerry displayed outstanding character, competence and integrity in serving government. Both truly deserve to be recognized by the UP community.

Stupidity is not the lack of knowledge, but the illusion of having it.

These are our present scholars. They are students of the U.P. College of Engineering.

The male students are not our brods. We have our own scholarship exclusive only for members of the TAU ALPHA Fraternity.

No unwritten rule for any of those mentioned. If I'm not mistaken we even consult the Dean of the College of Engineering for potential scholars.

As I said, we already have separate scholarships for our own brods. :)

DOST Secretary Mario G. Montejo

MANILA, Philippines–The University of the Philippines Alumni Association (UPAA) has announced the choices for this year’s UPAA Distinguished Alumni Awardees. The outstanding graduates will be recognized at the U.P. General Alumni-Faculty Homecoming & Reunion on June 21, 2014, 4 p.m.,  at Luciano E. Salazar Hall, Ang Bahay ng Alumni, UP Diliman Campus, Quezon City.
The UPAA Distinguished Alumni Awards are conferred on alumni who have demonstrated in their chosen fields of endeavor extraordinary achievements and excellent contributions that bring about substantial benefits to society and distinct honor to the University. Recognition is given for achievements and contributions that impact the community in which the alumni are or have been active, whether this is at the local, national or international level.
This year’s UPAA Most Distinguished Alumnus is  Department of Science and Technology  Secretary (DOST) Mario G. Montejo, BSME’74.  Secretary Montejo is a gifted multi-awarded engineer and inventor with a long list of technological innovations. Under his leadership, DOST, in partnership with colleges and universities and other organizations, has reshaped its policies and programs to address national problems, develop appropriate technologies, improve industry competitiveness and enhance delivery of social services.
Three alumni are being recognized for  Lifetime Achievement:  Dr. Manuel S. Alba, AA’55 (with honors); BSBA’57 cl;  Engr. Claudio B. Altura, BSCE’57; and  Dr. Jesusa Bagan-Lara, BSN’54 cl
“As what we have been doing the past few years, the UPAA makes a special effort to identify unsung alumni achievers — those whose accomplishments in little-known corners of the country are remarkable but have remained unheralded and unrecognized,” said Ponciano Rivera, UPAA President.

Stupidity is not the lack of knowledge, but the illusion of having it.

Lol! Funny guy.

He is my brod but not my contemporary. He entered The Fraternity before I was born.

Then again, you are right to a certain extent. When we Alphans gather, it doesn't matter if you're from the 30's, 40's, 50's, 60's, 70's, 80's, 90's, 2000's. We treat each other like contemporaries... something most orgs have yet to experience.

I first met Mario when I was a resident during the 90's. A soft-spoken and low-profile person. But true to being an Argonaut of U.P. Diliman, he let's his performance do much of the talking. Even back then he had made many inventions and creations that are practical and useful. Some of his designs are even aesthetically pleasing without compromising functionality.

He would take in resident brods for internship in his company, and they learned a lot from him. He makes sure that the brods get to be better students and engineers.

Stupidity is not the lack of knowledge, but the illusion of having it.

The campus was a sea of orange when the College of Engineering celebrated the kick-off of its centennial on Monday, February 15, 2010. Donning the Engineering blazing orange shirt
, the College’s students and faculty, as well as its alumni and staff participated in several activities.

The festivities started with a Fun Run at 6AM, where participants tried to outrun each other completing two rounds around the academic oval. There were winners for the different divisions of faculty, students, staff and alumni.

At 8AM, a brief program was held to honor the composer of the Engineering Hymn, entitled “Saludo sa Engg”. Engr. Herbie Rosales (TA'66), a graduate of Geodetic Engineering and a member of the Tau Alpha Fraternity very generously donated his talent and work to the College. He was awarded a plaque of appreciation as well as a commemorative packet containing 100 peso bills with the UP Centennial logo stamped on it. Engr. Rosales is also the composer of the UP Centennial Song “Ang Galing Mo”.

Groundbreaking ceremonies were held for the new Sundial. The new Sundial, or the Sundial of the New Millenium which is a project of Tau Alpha, will feature a digital display of not only the time, but of the day and month, as well. It is designed by Engr. Mario Montejo (TA'70), and will be located in the original site of the Sundial , at the west lawn of Melchor Hall. The ceremonial breaking of the ground was witnessed by no less than UP officials, Lydia Arcellana (Director of Alumni Relations), Lorna Paredes (Vice Chancellor for Academic Affairs), engineering alumnus Luis Sison (Vice Chancellor for Research and Development). They were joined by Dean Guevara, Mario Montejo and Romy Nones (TA'70), the president of the alumni association of the Tau Alpha Fraternity.

Qualified teams for the ongoing UP BEST Tech Tournament were announced by Dr. Benito M. Pacheco, director of the Institute ofCivil Engineering and one of the organizers of the contest. BEST which stands for “Bright, Engineering, Science and Technology-based solutions to pressing socio economic problems in the Philippines such as floods, landslides, windstorms, earthquakes, or other environmental hazards” is a competition which will award the best design of a system, structure, or device for disaster risk management.

Right after the program, the parade which is reminiscent of the Engineering Week of yesteryears commenced. Led by the UP Band no less, it was followed by the electric jeepneys brought by Engr. Chito Francisco (TA'59). Student organizations had their own floats with some of them graced by a muse, their representative in the last Ms. Engineering contest. The parade went around the oval once and proceeded to the CHAC (Cristy Hernandez Activity Center) for the next activity which was the basketball game between the alumni and faculty.

A friendly but fiercely fought basketball game ensued between the teams of the faculty and the alumni. Our faculty members emerged as winners, but the alumni should be lauded for their physical prowess (despite the years) and sportsmanship.

To cap the morning activities was fiesta style lunch served free for all. Thanks to the sponsorship of ACES and the able management of Dr. Aura Matias, everyone went home feeling full, happy and looking forward to the next centennial event.

BLAST FROM THE PAST (1989)
Brod Hilarion "Larry" Henares '44 wrote about the 2nd Golden Prism Award in his "Make My Day" column in the Philippine Daily Inquirer.

Girl Chasing And Pinching Ass

"IN Kenya, it is no longer legal to shoot lions and elephants with a high powered rifle. Today one is allowed to shoot them only with a camera."

"My old UP engineering frat Tau Alpha probably thinks the same way because it is sponsoring a Campus Girl photographic contest open to all high school and college students in Metro Manila. Three Prizes and trophies are offered for two categories, Color and Black-and-White: First Prize P2,000; Second Prize, P1,500; Third Prize, P500. Plus a Golden Prism Award for the Most Photogenic Campus Girl. Address all entries to Tau Alpha in College of Engineering, UP Diliman. Deadline for submission of entries is August 22. This is of course a ploy to blunt the edge of serious girl chasing, of which my old fraternity brods like Peping Apostol, Dante Santos, Ting Paterno, Vic Lim, Bing Limcauco are past masters."

"There is this covered walk called Tulay leading to the Physics lab behind the UP Art & Sciences building, where girl watching has become a preoccupation among the boys at UP, and where a few whistles of appreciation can prop up a girl’s sagging morale."

That’s exactly what happened in the case of Philippine Vice Consul Gerry Suliguin, a devoted young diplomat in the country’s Department of Foreign Affairs which oversee an estimated more than 11.5 million overseas Filipino workers spread around the world.

His story wrecks of colorful and fascinating anecdotes to triumphantly succeed and make a difference even as a boy, who at a young age, was forced by circumstances to live with an aunt in Cavite.

His father, a forestry officer from Laguna was assigned to Palawan where he met his mother. But circumstances forced them to part ways with their children.

“Some of us stayed with our grandparents. Some with aunties. I went to an Auntie who was, fortunately, a teacher, an educator. And that’s where I learned. I first learned the songs and then moved on to learn new things,” Suliguin told The Filipino Times.

The aunt who raised Suliguin had only one child so he was treated like the eldest yet given full freedom to explore and enrich his character.
He spent his weekend as a child tending to a bakery where he was paid up to PhP300 a week.

His job: To open and close the bakery as well as bake bread and help deliver them to as far as Laguna and Batangas.

“Aside from learning how to make bread, I learnt how to deal with other people. Pag nag-dedeliver ako ng bread parang ako lang yung bata na nag-dedeliver ng tinapay,” he recalled fondly his childhood as a young bakery assistant in Cavite. “I kept their orders. I kept their money. I delivered the bread. Tapos pag weekends, kasama din ako ng delivery trucks going to Batangas and Laguna.”

As he grew older, he moved on to other enterprising but profitable odd jobs like working in a slaughterhouse and a meat-shop.

“I will see my classmates early in the morning. Sila papasok ng school and ako patapos pa lang mag-tinda. I didn’t see anything wrong with that. Para sa akin walang idea sa akin na kawawa ako dahil wala akong parents or kawawa ako dahil sa tita ako nakatira or kawawa ako dahil I need to do these things para may baon,” he said with pride.

“Para sa akin yung mga stuff na yun lahat ng experiences na ginawa ko it, all added up kung ano ako naging ngayon. And it gave me a lot of opportunities. I was trusted na makipag-deal sa tao,” he added.

Despite being busy with his side jobs, Suliguin still excelled in school. He was a consistent honor student which was his ticket to a Department of Science and Technology scholarship at the University of the Philippines.

“Ang arrangement lang naman namin ng Tita ko was simple. If you get the scholarship, you go to school. If you don’t get the scholarship, you stay at home. Fortunately, I got it. That’s how I was able to enter UP,” he said.

In UP, he first took up Electronics Communication Engineering before deciding to switch to Philippine History major. He wanted it to be his pre-law course.
But as fate would have it, he did not finish his law studies but instead earned a master’s degree while working as research director in a private university at age 23.

He simultaneously took up an MBA while taking his master’s but the latter prevailed in the end.

From master’s, he went on to pursue his PhD in history, where, while a student, opened up an opportunity for him to enter DFA.

He went to DFA to get a passport so he could travel to Malaysia where he was scheduled to present a paper at the Universiti Sains Malaysia.

“So, I went to the department nung nag-apply ako ng passport ko. Nakita ko yung high school classmate ko sa processing. Sabi nya sa akin, ‘We have an exam coming up this May. Baka interested ka. Kuha ka lang.’ Sabi ko, ‘Sige, I’ll see when I get back from Malaysia. So when I got back from Malaysia, I took the exam and fortunately, I passed,” he recalled.

He spent a few more years as research director before deciding to move to DFA in 2008.

At DFA, Suliguin’s scholarly nature was further nurtured with lots of overseas trainings. He was, of course, being prepared for greater responsibilities outside of the country.

Upon returning to Australia where he was sent to study, Suliguin was told he would be posted overseas as vice consul.

“So, by the time I got home, sabi ng Assistant Secretary sa akin, ‘Wala ka nang ginawa kung hindi mag-aral kaya pumunta ka ng Dubai para magamit ka naman.’ Sabi nya, ‘All the time na nandito ka sa Department, wala ka nang ginawa kung hindi mag-aral kaya pumunta ka ng Dubai para mapakinabangan ka. That was the exact word. Mapakinabangan. So they sent me here,” he fondly recalls the moment when he was notified he will be posted overseas.

Dubai had since been his and his family’s home for the past three years and a half.

Under his leadership, the post managed to streamline its process despite the large volume of Filipinos who must be served. He admits the post needs more resources technology and manpower-wise.

He described his assignment here as “wonderful” and a very good post with a very supportive staff.

“The strength of the staff defines your mission. Without them, you cannot effectively serve the post. The staff is the link that will make you whole. And you can do more with a staff that supports you,” he said.

Despite his remarkable accomplishments, the vice consul stays grounded and has this to say for those who struggling in life: “There are two ways to look at things: The glass is half-full or the glass is half-empty. Always look at the positive things in life.”

Stupidity is not the lack of knowledge, but the illusion of having it.

TAU ALPHA Fraternity congratulates the UP Men's Basketball Team for winning against Adamson University yesterday, August 9, 2014. A bonfire was lit in celebration of the Fighting Maroons' victory over the Adamson Soaring Falcons earlier that day.

The Cauldron used for the bonfire was made and designed by Brod Joel Ajero TA '66 and was originally used during UP's Centennial Celebration Ceremonies.

We don't usually celebrate like this. In fact, we usually don't celebrate when our alumni and students achieve top positions in their different fields of endeavor/expertise. But just for that lone win in the UAAP Men's Basketball, we as a community will take it as an exception since that is seemingly U.P.'s Achilles' Heel.

Special mention to Brod Joel Ajero'66 who designed and personally created the Centennial Cauldron.

Stupidity is not the lack of knowledge, but the illusion of having it.

The Centennial Cauldron by the way was also sponsored by The Grand Alliance, more popularly known as ASTIG: Alpha Phi Omega, Sigma Rho, and TAU ALPHA Inter-Fraternity Group.

Notice that The Cauldron is supported by a Tri-pod.

From Brod Boyet Damot TA'86:

""The Triumvirate" - the camaraderie and informal association between these three vintage fraternities based in the University of the Philippines in Diliman has been around for decades starting way back in the 70s.

Also nicknamed ASTIG (A for ALPHA PHI OMEGA based in the College of Arts and Sciences, S for SIGMA RHO based in the College of Law, and T for TAU ALPHA based in the College of Engineering + Interfraternity Group) this brotherhood between brotherhoods did not come about from any forced prodding from alumni brods or even the academe.

Recalling my years in TAU ALPHA starting in the mid-80s, the Triumvirate shared some common traits among their respective general membership -- the penchant for inebriated merry making (proof of being card-bearing members of the Temple of Bacchus, the Roman God of Wine) and being rambunctious in expressing admiration for UP's pretty coeds (that ageless slogan of "Isang Malaking ....!" heard especially during the Lantern Parade).

All these while still producing outstanding graduates in Arts and Sciences, Law and Engineering. And embarking on service-oriented programs such as the Outreach Program below."
