The first fraternity rivalry in the Philippines, i would suppose, involved Rizal Center and Upsilon Sigma Phi (the first two fraternities in the country as well as in Asia).

Anybody familiar with how their rivalry in the UP campus materialized?

I am thinking that the rivalry between the Rizal Center and Upsilon was more of academic rivalry rather than those that involve rumbles.

Pero baka mali ako.

@Lib - magkaiba yung RC sa KoR tolski.

Ok.  Got this passage from an article about the Upsilon:

However, while the Upsilon is recognized as the first Greek-letter society in all of Asia, it was not the first fraternity in UP. That distinction belongs to the Rizal Center, a brotherhood of Jose Rizal followers, who viewed the hero in iconic fashion. For most of the pre-war era, a heated rivalry prevailed between these two societies, though the competition was manifested through the academic and political fora, and never through physical means. This rivalry for campus dominance remained true despite the birth of several other fraternities in the University.

From what I know, there's a whale of a difference between the Knights of Rizal and Rizal Center.

It's unfortunate that there may no longer be any Rizal Center fraternity member alive today.  Arguably, its most prominent member was diplomat extraordinaire Carlos P. Romulo (who served as President of the United Nations General Assembly, the highest post ever held internationally by any Filipino).  Am not sure if National Artist Nicanor Abelardo was a member but he composed the Initiation Song for Rizal Center Fraternity.

Rizal Center Fraternity was "THE" fraternity of UP in the 1930s.  It reigned supreme in Padre Faura.  Upsilon provided competition but it can be said that Rizal Center held its sway.

The intervention of the war may have put signalled the beginning for Rizal Center.  While Upsilon bounced back tremendously.  Rizal Center was not as fortunate.  But both fraternities continued their rivalry in Padre Faura (then to Diliman in the 50s) and even extended to Los Banos where they both established chapters (for what was initially for purely political reasons - because with Los Banos brods, they have better chances of winning student council elections since the entire UP system voted for only one Student Council).  Anecdotally, this is probably why Upsilon never expanded beyond Padre Faure, Diliman and Los Banos - there just is no strategic sense to form further chapters as they have no voice in the Diliman elections anyway.

And what probably eroded Rizal Center further was the birth of other fraternities, all with Greek letters, after the war and through the Martial Law years.

If I recall, the last prominent Rizal Center member who died a few years back was industrialist Potenciano Illusorio, the founder of Baguio Country Club and Philcomsat.

It would be great if there were actual Rizal Center members alive today who can tell us their story.

Haven't really heard about Rizal Center. This information is interesting... All the while, I only knew that Upsilon was the first greek letter fraternity in the Philippines and in Asia (and syempre in UP na rin). Lagi nga itong ibinibida ng erpat ko na lonsi eh. Walang nababanggit na non-greek letter fraternity that existed before.
