The hand sign of APO Phils is the Scout Sign.

An APO USA member told me that the "scout sign" to them means silence.

The crowd went wild after APO Phils NP Mel Adriano delivered his speech at Hotel Sheraton, Boston, MA (APO USA 2008 Convention). Then he waved in the position of the "scout sign" suddenly the crowd went silent. hehehe.

FYI:

APO USA and APO Phils have different constitutions or as we call it "By Laws".

Same principles. But different in culture.

For example, the Catholic Church, same beliefs anywhere in the world BUT they don't do "penitensya" in Rome, yet its a Catholic tradition by Filipinos.

Another one, in the APO USA they call everybody "Brothers", even the female members. Sa Pinas may "sis"

OK, trying to respond to everyone...

First of all, what has been written about the Handshake is correct. Alpha Phi Omega - USA uses the right hand in a specific way, Alpha Phi Omega - Philippines uses the left hand.

As for handsigns...

The Sign of the Alpha Phi Omega Fraternity is the Scout Sign.

There are cultural differences between the Alpha Phi Omega -USA chapters at Historically Black (African-American) Colleges and Universities and those at schools that are not. Those at HBCU are more likely to throw the sign than those at non-HBCUs. At non-HBCUs, the Scout Sign would be used in the way that it is used in Boy Scout meetings, where in a large grouping a leader would raise the scout sign in order to cause a group of scouts to be quiet.

The group in the later two pictures is at Grambling University an HBCU, and thus they may have decided on a sign to throw which is not used to cause the group to be silent. However it is *NOT* the official one for the National Fraternity (I can tell it is Grambling because of the "Men's Memorial Gymnasium" behind them which I can only find one place when I google).

I'll bring these pictures to some brothers that I know who are more familiar with the customs at various HBCUs and let you all know, OK?

As for APO-USA refering to everyone as brothers, it mostly comes from the differences in the way that APO-USA and APO-Phil brought women into full membership. Basically for Alpha Phi Omega-USA, there were individual chapters that admitted women as brothers against the National bylaws and eventually with the help of US Law, those chapters became the ones who were the dominant group. For APO-Philippines, the Fraternity had a number of auxiliary sororities which were eventually brought together as a single national auxiliary sorority which then came into equality with the fraternity.

I find it interesting that APO-USA, actually use the right hand for handshake. I said interesting because that's exactly the handshake of SAE-USA.

Considering that Frank Horton was a SAE-USA member when he created APO, I just find it surprising that he used the grip of his old fraternity, and use it for his new founded fraternity...

First of all, according to the Story behind the Founding, Thane S. Cooley came up with the handclasp.

What I don't know if if Thane S. Cooley was in Sigma Alpha Epsilon (8 incl FRH), Krescents (5) or independent (1).

Also, the handclasp of Sigma Alpha Epsilon -USA and the handclasp of Alpha Phi Omega-USA aren't generally shared with non-members.

Yes, like it says on the various Alpha Phi Omega -Philippines web pages, the APO-USA handclasp is different from the one used by APO-Philippines and is done with the right hand, but that doesn't mean it is just a mirror image of APO-Philippines.

DO SAE-Philippines and SAE-USA use the same handclasp?

Also, I'd say that there are no more than 20 different ways to do a handclasp that don't look overly ornate, so it also wouldn't surprise me if two completely unrelated fraternities had exactly the same clasp.

Also, handsigns are a completely different issue than handclasps.

In total,
You get to decide if that equals a "no comment", "I don't know", "I know some, but won't tell you which parts I do know"
